Back to the future already? Then give us our hoverboards!

Right, it’s time for all you boffins to shape up – the future of Back to the Future is less than a year away (21st October 2015, to be precise) and you’ve still not created a time-travelling DeLorean!

I suppose we’ll have to cut you some slack, what with you inventing 3D tellies and Blu-ray players. But how can we expect Marty McFly to skate around quaint towns like a joyous manchild if we’ve not even invented hoverboards?

Well, we’re at least one step of the way – Californian tech company Arx Pax are on their 18th prototype of a live functioning hoverboard. And it actually works! Sort of…

While you won’t be able to dash through town or escape other hi-tech skaters, the hoverboard can move on specially created surfaces. The board works a lot like a maglev (magnetic levitation) train, using magnets to hover a few inches from the ground.

Speaking to national newspaper The Guardian, Arx Pax founder Greg Henderson said, “About two years ago, we began investigating magnetic field architecture (MFA) and hover technology as a better way to build, move people and move materials.

“During our research, we discovered a way to transmit electromagnetic technology that is far more efficient than anything else.

“This means that our patent-pending Hendo Hover Engine technology can enable platforms to hover over non-ferrous materials with payloads of virtually any size and weight.”

Just make sure you’ve got it ready by next October, Greg! It’d be a bit rubbish if Marty shows up and only gets to admire big tellies and video on demand services in 2015.

But if you just want some top memorabilia from the film, you might have to save up – Marty McFly’s prop hoverboard was sold at a London auction house last month for £26,000. Most of us would have to time travel for next week’s lottery numbers to get that kind of cash.

You might not be hovering to work on a board this time next year, but you can find plenty of hi-tech hovercrafts on our site. So, have a look around to be back to the future right now.
